Nigeria captain Mikel Obi has expressed
his delight at the release of 21 out of the over 200 schoolgirls
kidnapped by Boko Haram from their school in Chibok town in Borno
State two years ago.
The militant group freed the girls on
Thursday after the Switzerland and the International Red Cross brokered
a deal between them and the Federal Government for their release.
The development sparked jubilation in Chibok and other parts of the country after the girls regained their freedom.
And Chelsea midfielder Mikel, who guided
the Super Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Zambia’s Chipolopolo in their
opening Russia 2018 World Cup Group B qualifier at Levy Mwanawasa
Stadium in Ndola on Sunday, joined the celebrations of the girls’
release.
The South Africa 2013 Africa Cup of
Nations winner, who helped Nigeria reach the second round at the 2014
World Cup in Brazil, had condemned the girls’ abduction, appealing to
the Boko Haram fighters to free them.
The 2012 UEFA Champions League winner also got involved in charity works in Borno State due to the girls’ abduction.
Mikel wrote on Twitter on Thursday he was proud to support empowerment projects in Borno.
