Why Chicken Is Good For Men

From soup preparations to fried and roasted forms, chicken is a popular food in India that is cooked in multitude ways in every household. Chicken is one of the most valued foods among people of all ages, throughout the world. Not only it forms a crucial part of various culinary traditions but it is also highly nutritious and delicious to taste. Here are some amazing health benefits of eating chicken.
Helps boost testosterone levels
Men should consume foods rich in zinc as it helps regulate testosterone levels as well as boost sperm production.
Helps build muscles
Chicken is one of the best non-vegetarian sources of protein. It is lean meat, which means that it contains more amount of proteins and less amount of fat. A 100g serving of roasted chicken offers you 31g of protein, making it great for those who want to bulk up and build muscles.
Keeps their bones healthy
Apart from protein, chicken is rich in several minerals like phosphorus and calcium, that helps keeps bones in mint condition. Also, it has selenium which has been known to cut risk of arthritis.
Relieves stress
Chicken has two nutrients that are great for reducing stress – tryptophan and Vitamin B5. Both of them have a calming effect on your body and this makes chicken an excellent option after a stressful day. Also, it tastes great and that too adds to its stress releasing, happiness inducing properties. Read our mega guide on how to deal with stress.
Reduces PMS symptoms
Magnesium, a nutrient present in chicken helps soothe symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome and fight the various mood changes that a woman might experience during her periods. Here are more tips on dealing with PMS.
Boosts immunity
Chicken soup has long been used as a home remedy for relieving cold, flu and other common respiratory infections. The hot steam of chicken soup helps clear nasal and throat congestion while the thick fluid coats the throat to prevent invasion of respiratory linings by microbes to cause infection. A study evaluating this effect suggested that chicken soup inhibits migration of neutrophils, a type of immune cells, thereby preventing inflammation during common infections and boosting immunity.
Promotes heart health
Chicken, being rich in vitamin B6, plays an important role in preventing heart attack. Vitamin B6 helps by lowering the levels of homocysteine, one of the key components linked to an increased risk of heart attack. Besides, chicken is also a good source of niacin that helps lower cholesterol, a risk factor for heart disease development. The American Heart Association also recommends consumption of chicken over red meat since it contains less amount of saturated fats and is also a good source of omega-3 fatty acids that exhibit beneficial cardiovascular effects.
How to cook chicken in a healthy way
Different parts of chicken have different levels of fat and cholesterol. The breast meat is the leanest with 28g containing just 1g of fat. This is followed by the chicken’s legs which has 2g of fat per every 28g.

Before you decide to cook chicken, make sure you cut of all the visible fat as it isn’t good for your heart. These fat deposits usually look white in color, and you can ask your vendor to point it out for you if you have trouble identifying it. To make it healthier, you should first marinate it with healthy spices like turmeric, coriander along with curd so that the chicken absorbs all its nutrients and becomes tastier. After that, you could try cooking it in a pressure cooker so that the chicken is soft and tender to eat. Baking or grilling it in a microwave is also an healthy option that you can consider.
Frozen chicken
These days with the advent of cold-storage a lot of people have started consuming frozen chicken. After removing it from the freezer, thaw it in the refrigerator. Doing this anywhere else will cause bacteria to build-up. Also, once you’ve thawed a frozen chicken you should never refreeze it. So, thaw only the amount of chicken you need at that point in time.

Naira Exchanges For N490 Per Dollar At Parallel Market

The Naira on Wednesday weakened to N490 to a dollar at the parallel market after appreciating to N485 to a dollar during the Christmas break.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Naira lost five points, representing a depreciation of 1.03 per cent, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N590 and N502, respectively.

At the Bureau De Change Window, the Naira traded at N399 to a dollar, CBN controlled rate, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N602 and N510, respectively.

The Naira traded at N305.25 to a dollar at the official inter-bank market.

Traders at the market said the scarcity of forex was still exerting pressures on the Naira.

Meanwhile, President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria, Aminu Gwadabe, said the pressure on the Naira was disturbing and dangerous to investment, output and employment.

Gwadabe called for harmony between the fiscal and monetary policies in addressing the woes of the Naira.

“There is the need for concerted collaboration among both the fiscal, monetary policy makers and the operators in the economy to address this monster facing the economy.

“I must confessed that I am disturbed and worried,’’ Gwadabe said. (NAN)

American Billionaire Offers Scholarships To Chibok Schoolgirls

A black American billionaire, Mr. Robert Smith, has volunteered to sponsor the education of 24 girls from Chibok community, including the 21 recently rescued ones.

Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, made this known to State House correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said beneficiaries of the scheme include the first set of escapees from Boko Haram insurgents.

According to him, the girls will be admitted through negotiation at the American University of Nigeria, Yola.

“Smith has offered to pay for the education of the 21 Chibok girls released through negotiations and is offering to take responsibility for all the others who will, hopefully, be eventually set free.

“The Murtala Mohammed Foundation in the country is equally interested,’’ he added.

On the welfare of the recently-released 21 Chibok girls, Garba said “they are being treated as adoptees of the Federal Government, but there is a lot of local and international interest in the future plans of the girls.’’

However, some of the parents of the 21 Chibok girls have complained that they did not have enough room for interactions with their daughters brought home for Christmas by the Department of State Services.

Reacting, Shehu admitted that there were some hitches arising from a lack of understanding of the objective of the trip on the part of some security operatives.

He, however, stated that following the receipt of this complaint, a directive had been given from the headquarters for the access by the parents to be eased.

“If the situation persists, please let us know so that the higher authorities will make a further intercession,” he said.(NAN)

Woman Beats 10-Year -Old Girl To Death In Lagos

The police in Lagos State have arrested a middle-aged woman, Linda Alapa, for allegedly beating her 10-year-old housemaid, Joy Mbafan, to death.
Mbafan lived with the suspect on Bolanle Oduniyi Street, Okegbegun, in the Ikorodu area of the state.
It was learnt that Alapa was flogging the girl for a misdemeanor around 3am last Monday when she passed out and died afterwards.
At the Ikorodu General Hospital morgue where she had gone to deposit Mbafan’s corpse, a doctor on duty was said to have noticed marks of violence on the body and alerted the police at the Sagamu Road Division.
A police source told our correspondent that after interrogation, Alapa confessed to beating the girl, adding that she would be charged with murder.
“She wanted to absolve herself of the death of the victim, but for the doctor on duty who raised the alarm after a close examination and she was arrested. There are marks of violence on the body of the deceased and she did not deny beating her.”
Some residents of Bolanle Oduniyi Street, who spoke to our corespondent  on Wednesday, said they had warned her many times to desist from assaulting the victim to no avail.
A neighbour of the suspect said Alapa did not only beat the girl but also starved her of food.
The woman, who gave her name only as Ellen, said although she did not know what led to the beating on that day, “she usually beat the girl for messing up their apartment.”
“Around 3am on the day the girl died, I heard her crying as the woman (Alapa) flogged her. I woke up my husband to intervene. He said he was tired of the woman’s insults. After a while, she stopped crying.
“It was when I came back from work that afternoon that I saw a crowd on our premises in tears. They said Joy (Mbafan) was dead. The woman’s husband was not at home that day. It was the landlord that told him about the incident on the telephone.”
The landlord and Alapa’s husband were not around when our correspondent visited the residence on Wednesday. The Alapas’ apartment was locked.
Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the girl’s father was late while her mother was ill, adding that Alapa had brought her to Lagos from a village in the eastern part of Nigeria.
“But she used to beat up and starve the girl of food. On several occasions, the girl would come to me to eat, saying her aunty did not give her food.”
Lamenting Mbafan’s death, a trader in the area, who identified herself only as Deborah, told our correspondent that she had urged the suspect to counsel Mbafan rather than apply corporal punishment.
She said, “She made that little girl to lose self-confidence. Her body bore marks of lashes. Now that the girl is dead, she should also face the music.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, in a text message, said, “I confirm the case. The suspect is under investigation while the corpse has been deposited in a morgue for autopsy.”

Fayose Signs N94bn 2017 Budget Into Law

The Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, on Wednesday signed the state’s 2017 budget of N94bn into law.
It was an increase of N1bn on the budget estimates of N93.4bn presented to the Ekiti State House of Assembly by Fayose some weeks ago.
According to the Speaker, Kola Oluwawole, the additional N1bn was added to the capital expenditure presented to the Assembly.

Commending the lawmakers and the people of the state for their support, the governor said that the harmonious relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government would continue to subsist.
“We are one of the four states whose budgets had been passed into law. It is a budget of the people to give the best to our people. Enough copies of the budget will be printed and copies put on the Internet for all to peruse,” he said.
Oluwawole, who commended the governor for the giant strides recorded by his administration despite the paucity of funds, promised the support and cooperation of the assembly members for the governor.

N4.7bn Alleged Fraud: EFCC Re-arraigns Ladoja Eight Years After

the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday re-arraigned a former Governor of Oyo State, Chief Rashidi Ladoja, alongside one Waheed Akanbi for an alleged fraud of N4.7bn.
The EFCC claimed that Ladoja and Akanbi committed the offence in 2007.
The charge, marked FHC/L/336c/08, was filed against them in 2008 and they were first arraigned before Justice A. R. Mohammed eight years ago.
Their re-arraignment before Justice Mohammed Idris of a Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday followed the dismissal of their appeal against the charges which went all the way to the Supreme Court over a period of seven years.
Seventy-two-year-old Ladoja appeared in court in a green agbada made of ankara fabric, a brown cap and black shoes while Akanbi was dressed in a black suit.
The eight counts pressed against them by the EFCC border on money laundering and unlawful conversion of funds belonging to the Oyo State Government to their own.
In one of the counts, Ladoja and Akanbi were accused of converting a sum of N1,932,940,032.48, belonging to Oyo State Government to their personal own, using a Guaranty Trust Bank account of a company, Heritage Apartments Limited.
The EFCC claimed that they retained the money sometime in 2007, despite their knowledge that it was a proceed of a criminal conduct.
In another instance, Ladoja was accused of removing the sum of £600,000 from the state coffers in 2007 and sent it to Bimpe Ladoja, who was at the time in London.
The ex-governor was also accused of converting the sum of N42m, belonging to the state, to his own and subsequently used it to purchase an armoured Land Cruiser jeep.
He was also accused of converting a sum of N728,600,000 and another N77,850,000 at separate times in 2007 to his own.
The EFCC claimed that Ladoja transferred the N77, 850,000 to one Bistrum Investments, which he nominated to help him purchase a property named Quarter 361, Ibadan, Oyo State.
The EFCC told the court that Ladoja and Akanbi acted contrary to sections 17(a) and18 (1) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004 and were liable to be punished under sections 14(1), 16(a) (b) and 18(2) of the same Act.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty upon the charges being read to them.
The EFCC, lawyer, Mr. Oluwafemi Olabisi, consequently asked the court to fix a date for the commencement of trial.
But the defence counsel, Mr. Bolaji Onilenla and Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, informed the court of their clients’ bail applications.
Onilenla, representing Ladoja, urged the court to allow his client to continue on the bail conditions granted him in 2008 by Justice Mohammed.
“The first defendant has kept full faith with the terms and conditions of the bail and there was no single incident of default,” Onilenla said, while assuring Justice Idris that his client would “behave himself” and make himself available for his trial.
In his bench ruling, Justice Idris held that the court could not deny the defendants bail on account of their exercising their constitutional right of appeal, which resulted in the delay of the case.
He adjourned till February 14, 15 and 16, 2017, for commencement and continuation of trial.

WICKEDNESS: Man Kidnaps, Drugs Church Member’s 10-year- Old Son

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old suspect, Triumph Okechukwu, for allegedly abducting a 10-year-old boy, Chukwudalu Nnaji, in the Orile area of the state.
It was learnt that a tricycle rider, Chinonso Obinna, was also apprehended as an accomplice to the crime.
It was learnt that Okechukwu and the victim’s mother attended the same church and lived in the same neighbourhood.
Okechukwu and Obinna were alleged to have lodged in the Sunderland Hotel Annex, a hotel in the area, to perfect the crime.
They were said to have left the hotel on Thursday, waylaid and abducted the victim on his way to school.
Our correspondent was told that the two men took Nnaji into the hotel room, where they forced a substance suspected to be sleeping drug down his throat.
It was gathered that the 10-year-old resisted the men and the sound of the struggle aroused the suspicion of other people in the hotel.
The suspects were said to have been beaten up before they were handed over to policemen from the Orile division.
A source said the police were alerted to the incident around 10am.
He said, “The prime suspect, Okechukwu, connived with the tricycle operator, Obinna, to take the boy to the hotel, where they had already secured a room.
“He promised to settle Obinna after he had been able to get ransom from the boy’s parents. The boy was on his way to school when they picked him on the road as if they were assisting him.
“Together, they took him to the hotel. They planned to keep him in their room until the parents paid a ransom. However, the boy struggled and called for help, which attracted the attention of people in the hotel.”
When our correspondent approached the manager of the hotel, which is on Coker Street, Orile, he denied that the incident happened on the premises.
A resident, however, told our correspondent that the incident generated confusion in the area.
“The two men were apprehended and seriously beaten up until the police came to rescue them,” the resident, who did not identify himself, said.
Our correspondent learnt that the suspects had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.
A source said the prime suspect confessed to the crime in his statement to the police, adding that he said he planned to collect ransom from the boy’s parents.
He said, “Investigations showed that the main suspect and the boy’s parents attended the same church. Okechukwu said he studied all the members of the church to know those who were wealthy and he decided to go for the boy. He said he only wanted to make money.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that investigations were ongoing.
She said, “We gathered that both suspects, who were lodgers at the Sunderland Hotel Annex, Orile, allegedly accosted Nnaji on his way to school. They lured him to their hotel room, where they administered some substance suspected to be sleeping drug on him. However, the victim was rescued by the hotel workers, while the suspects were handed over to the police.”
Badmos said the victim had been taken to a hospital for treatment.

Falcons Deserve Better Treatment

THE ongoing face-off between the senior female national football team, the Super Falcons, and Nigeria’s sports authorities over the non-payment of the players’ entitlements is a self-inflicted national embarrassment the country could well have avoided through adequate planning. It is an ironic situation that has turned a moment of personal joy and national celebration into an occasion for regret and utter desolation; it is a scandal that is once more soiling the image of the country, locally and abroad.
How can it be said that a team that went to a tournament, saw and conquered all the opposition that the African continent could offer, is now holed up in some hotel in Abuja, without even the means of travelling home to reunite with expectant families and friends who had followed their progress throughout the competition? Some of them, professionals plying their trade abroad, find themselves in a situation where they have to make personal arrangements to rejoin their respective clubs.
Why should the girls be made to suffer for their patriotism and sacrifice? Why should some killjoy be denying them their moment of pride after staking their all to project a positive image of the country internationally? Little wonder that one of the players, Francesca Ordega, has already voiced her regret for choosing to lace her boots for Nigeria. Situations such as what the Super Falcons are presented with now are capable of driving people to the extremes.
Unlike their male counterparts, the Super Eagles, who always insist on being paid their full entitlements before kicking the first ball in any competition, the Falcons showed a high level of self-denial, enduring a torrid period of camping, playing qualifying matches and then competing and winning the continental trophy without being paid their bonuses and allowances. Their coach, Florence Omagbemi, a former international that won the African Women Championships four times during her active playing days, is said to have worked unpaid since she was engaged in March, about 10 months in all.
Having fulfilled their own part of the bargain, the Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung, and the Amaju Pinnick-led Nigeria Football Federation are now saying there is no money to pay them. Given the fact that the minister, with his entourage, visited Cameroon on a chartered flight for the final match in which the Falcons stunned the host nation to lift the trophy, how are the players supposed to be convinced that there is actually no money to fund a competition that had been on the calendar for more than two years?
This is a serious scandal and national embarrassment; somebody has to step up and save the nation from this shame. Unfortunately, who is there to bail out the country? Certainly not Dalung, who, in the midst of this bizarre development, admitted that there were actually no plans, ab initio, to pay the players’ entitlements. He was quoted as saying, “Don’t forget that nobody even knew the team would emerge victorious. If we were confident they would emerge victorious, all the federation would have done is to plan for the process of participation and entitlement.”
This is outright scandalous. The question to ask is, what is Dalung doing in the Sports Ministry? How can he say that he had no confidence in a team that had won the competition in eight out of the 10 outings so far? Apparently, the minister is not aware of Nigeria’s preeminent position and profoundly rich tradition when it comes to female football in Africa.
The same minister had said when the Dream Team, the male football team to the last Olympic Games, was stranded in the United States that he did not know that the team was there. That was the response of a minister who was supposed to take action to save the country from an international embarrassment. It took the intervention of a Japanese surgeon, Katsuya Takasu, who learnt of the plight of the team, to come to its rescue. Even then, the minister would not let that moment go by without doling out another dose of insult to the man whose source of wealth he not only questioned, but promptly linked to drugs.
Much as Nigerian athletes have always striven to give their best while on national duties, scandals like the ongoing ordeal of the Super Falcons offer an insight into why sports development has remained stunted in the country over the years. Poor funding, neglect of the athletes who are the main focus of activities and, above all, inept administration, have always combined to hold down progress in Nigerian sports. Poor preparation was evident in the way the female junior teams performed in their recent international outings.
That the players have refused to leave their hotel rooms until they are paid the cumulative sum of $25,400 claimed by each of them is a measure of the athletes’ lack of confidence in those who administer sports in the country. In the past, the Super Eagles have had cause to haggle over how much they should be paid and even gone ahead to collect the money before playing matches. This happened during the France ’98 and Brazil 2014 World Cup finals.
Needless to say that the team, after using the best part of the time they were supposed to spend resting to fight over bonuses, eventually lost those matches. They even refused to travel to Brazil for the last Confederations Cup competition until they were paid, just because they could not trust the sports officials to keep their promises.
Perhaps, this is the time for the NFF and the Sports Ministry to come clean about how they have been handling the millions of dollars that have been coming in from FIFA, the sponsors and the Federal Government. The federation cannot continue to collect money from the government and then start shouting interference each time it is told to render account.
In the meantime, both Pinnick, said to have travelled abroad for medical check-up, and Dalung should find a way of paying the girls. Besides, President Muhammadu Buhari should also take advantage of this crisis to ensure that only those who know about sports and have something to offer are allowed to administer sports in this country. This is actually time for a reorganisation of both the ministry and the federation by the relevant authorities.

No Time For Academic Pursuit In My Military Days –Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, said there was no time for officers to further their education during his days in the military.
He said military men were only preoccupied with war, coups and counter-coups at the time.
A statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, quoted the President as speaking during the decoration of his Aide-De-Camp, Col. Mohammed Abubakar; and the Commander of the Presidential Air Fleet, Air-Vice Marshal Sadiq Kaita, with their new ranks at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
“I am happy with the intellectual approach of the military. In our time, there was no time for academic pursuit.  It was all about war, coups and counter-coups,” the President said.
He said modern military required superiority of intellect and imagination to achieve victory in warfare.
While expressing happiness with the dazzling array of university degrees the newly-promoted officers had acquired, the President urged all officers to ensure the translation of academic achievements to performance in the field and other places of assignment.
Buhari said in times of peace and stability, military officers should use such opportunity to pursue their intellectual transformation which should go side-by-side with hardware transformation of modern armies.
The President urged officers to read History, irrespective of their academic backgrounds, describing it as an important prerequisite for strategic learning and success in the military.
Buhari congratulated both officers on their various achievements in their services, calling on them to always be mindful of the welfare of those placed under their command.
Both Kaita and Abubakar had, prior to their current assignments, served the country in peacekeeping missions abroad.

Robbers Write Lagos Residents To Pay For Christmas

Some suspected armed robbers have written some Lagos residents,  telling them to prepare to pay them for Christmas on a date not mentioned.
Residents of Joseph Harrison Estate in the Yaba area of Lagos State got the letter on Wednesday, notifying them of the impending attack on them.
The News Agency of Nigeria gathered that the letter was placed on the vehicle of one of the residents and was discovered when he was about to wash his car.
“We are coming this week to collect our dues and to visit tenants and landlords of Joseph Harrison Street. If you like, go and bring police or soldiers; we are coming to perform our duties.
“If you cooperate, we will not kill, but if you fail to cooperate, blood will flow,” the letter read.
NAN noted on Thursday that sterner security measures had been put in place to protect lives and property on the estate.
The Chairman of the dommunity development association of the area, Mr. Bolanle  Akinyemi, said the estate had enjoyed some peace for long, as it was protected by guards and the police from the Sabo Police Post.
“We are also mindful of the slum that surrounds us and we have been conscious of suspected criminals.
“No one has received such  a letter before, but there was a case in 2013 when a company in the estate was robbed,” he said.
The chairman said they had reported the threat to the Sabo Police Division and more guards had been engaged on the estate.
Concerned residents urged the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, to increase police presence on the estate.

GOBE: One Million Boys Invades Community, Cuts Victim’s Hand

Some hooligans, popularly called One million boys, on Tuesday invaded the Kudeti area of Ibadan, attacking youths in the area.

It was gathered that they also cut off the hand of one of their victims.
A resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that the hooligans invaded the area because youths in the communities refused to join the group after several attempts to woo them.
“More than 300 One million boys stormed the community with weapons, including guns. They shot at youths in the area. They also attacked them with knives and cutlasses. A victim, Sikiru Muftau, also known as Alase, had the lower part of one of his hands severed completely and they made away with the part.
“There was commotion in the communities and people fled the area for fear of further attack. I am also moving out because the police refused to come throughout the attack that lasted for more than five hours,” he said.
Our correspondent learned that relatives of the victim had been calling on the suspected hooligans to return the severed part of the hand.
Another resident, however, said Muftau was a factional leader of the group, adding that the fight was between two rival factions.
When contacted, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said the command was aware of the incident, adding that the severed hand had been returned.
“We are aware of the visit of some hooligans to the community and we are investigating the attack.
“I have the information that the hand has been returned. The truth is that no official complaint was lodged at any of the command’s police stations until on Wednesday morning. We have yet to apprehend any of the attackers. However,  investigation is ongoing,” he said.

Tougher Times Ahead, Says Living Faith Church Founder Bishop Oyedepo

The Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Dr. David Oyedepo, has said that Nigerians will experience harsher economic challenges.
He, therefore, enjoined them to draw closer to God in order to survive the impending tough economic climate.
Oyedepo said this on Tuesday during the opening session of the annual Shiloh programme of the church in Ota, Ogun State.
“It looks tough presently but it’s going to get tougher in the days to come. Obedience to the terms of covenant will put you in total command. When all your obedience is fulfilled, all opposition is brought down,” he said.
Alluding to the Bible, the bishop said that recession was not a new phenomenon, urging the audience to be committed to God to overcome the financial challenges.
“However, from scriptures, all the children of the covenant, who walk according to biblical truth will always enjoy exemptions from the gross darkness and evils plaguing the world,” he said.
According to a statement from the church, the opening session was witnessed by over 2,000 delegates from 41 countries.

APC’s Abia-North candidate murdered in Lagos

A former candidate of the  All Progressives Congress for the Abia-North constituency in the 2015 general election, Ugochukwu Nwosu, has been murdered in his Lagos residence.
Ugochukwu was reportedly stabbed to death by a suspected robber at his residence on Shakiru Oleko Street, Agric, Ikorodu.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim, despite his injuries, overpowered and apprehended the suspect.
He, however, gave up the ghost shortly after he was rushed to a private hospital in the area.
Our correspondent gathered that the 46-year-old politician was a first class graduate of Chemical Engineering of the University of Port-Harcourt, with a Masters degree in Chemical Analysis from Harvard University.
He was also said to be the Chief Executive Officer of Idife Nwosu Investment Limited and Business Info Base Business Directory.
His driver, one Obinna, said he and his boss were awoken by the sound of falling crates around 3am on Thursday, December 1.
He said, “On the day of the incident, my boss and I were the only ones at home. At about 3am, we heard sound of  empty crates of drinks in the compound falling. My boss, who was still working on his laptop in the living room, decided to go out to check what was happening.
“The sound also woke me up and I followed him. Shortly after, I heard sounds of two people struggling. I quickly ran out and behold, I saw my boss in a brawl with a man; he (Ugochukwu) was bleeding in his right hand.
“I joined him and we overpowered, disarmed and tied up the intruder.
“Afterwards, I noticed that my boss was about passing out.  I had thought he was bleeding only from his right hand, but I didn’t know that the intruder also stabbed him below the abdomen. I immediately drove him to a private hospital; but he had lost a lot of blood. He was later confirmed dead by a doctor.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect was handed over to policemen from the Owotu division, who transferred him to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Yaba.
The suspect, who identified himself as Dolapo Olajiru, said he was a robber, adding that he had stabbed the victim while they struggled.
He said, “I used to be a conductor but in the last three months, things have been very rough.  I have not had a vehicle to work with. In the process of waiting, a friend of mine, Ayo, introduced me to robbery. We are five in our gang and we usually rob houses in the Ikorodu area.  When we rob, we take away phones, money and valuables that we can lay our hands on.  We do not have a gun; we only use knives to scare our victims.
“That night, I was walking around to identify a house to rob when I saw the honourable’s  (Ugochukwu) house and I scaled the fence. I landed on some empty crates which also fell. The sound alerted the owner of the house and I heard a door open.  I immediately hid behind the crates.
“When he came close enough, I attacked him and we started to fight.  He was strong, but because I had a knife, I stabbed him in his right hand and he started bleeding.  He held on and tried to take the knife from me; but he couldn’t.  I also stabbed him in the waist, and it was at that point another man joined in the fight.  They overpowered me and tied me up.”
Olajiru said he was not hired to kill Ugochukwu, adding that he was only trying to “survive the hard times.”
The deceased’s elder brother, Innocent Nwosu, described the late politician as a gentleman, saying he was shocked at the news of his death.
“We were preparing for our father’s 83rd birthday slated for December 29, 2016. He was the one piloting the whole arrangement and now he is no more.
“I really pray that our father survives the shock. This is a terrible loss to my family and the entire Abia State,” he added.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident.
She said, “It is a case of armed robbery. The command received an emergency call about the robbery and our operatives rushed to the scene. Unfortunately, the man had been stabbed. One of the suspects was arrested. Investigation is ongoing and efforts are on to arrest other members of his gang.”

Govt gives Lagosians till Dec. 16 to pay taxes

Ambode
The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service says all taxpayers that have yet to fulfil their obligation have between December 1 and 16, 2016, to remit overdue taxes and levies to avoid prosecution.
The Executive Chairman of LIRS, Mr. Ayodele Subair, on Wednesday stated that the agency had, in the last few months, embarked on massive advocacy and enlightenment programmes, educating Lagos taxpayers on the laws bordering on tax administration and the benefits of paying taxes as and when due.
He said, “In spite of the significant decline in the allocation from the federation account, the Lagos State Government is still embarking on massive infrastructural development and renewal. These projects cannot be achieved if taxpayers refuse to discharge their civic responsibility to the state.
“Taxpayers are hereby advised to clear all outstanding payments on or before December 16, 2016, failing which the state government will commence criminal prosecution of offenders in line with relevant provisions of the Personal Income Tax Act, 2004 (As amended).”
The LIRS boss explained that the taxes and levies expected to be remitted to the government within the grace period comprised the Tax Audit Liability of back years, the Personal Income Tax (PAYE, Direct Assessment, Self-Assessment), Withholding Tax, Hotel Occupancy and Restaurants Consumption Tax and Land Use Charge and Ground Rent.
“LIRS has put all the necessary machineries in place to ensure the enforcement of the tax law with effect from December 17, 2016, when the grace period lapses. We advise all taxpayers to comply because the full weight of the law will be brought to bear on taxable persons or corporations that fail to remit their taxes and levies,” Subair added.
